This ends our “VHS-mas in July” daily marathon, and my 200th Tumblr post since I started this page in January. Additionally, in 2001, Goodtimes (again, with Cayre) released “Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys”, a CG sequel to the Rankin-Bass puppet-animated Rudolph special from 1964. In 1998, Goodtimes would release an entirely new animated Rudolph movie, produced by the Cayre Brothers, and featuring John Goodman, Bob Newhart, and Whoopi Goldberg. Goodtimes’ run with Rudolph didn’t end there. Its artwork is a more direct lift from one of Goodtimes/Kids Klassics’ standard-case, 30-minute releases. It features the Rudolph and Christmas Carol cartoons, but adds three shorts that hadn’t appeared on any of the previous three tapes. The last tape cuts the proceedings back down to 60 minutes.

(While Goodtimes specialized in releasing public domain material, they also attained the rights to put out tapes featuring Care Bears, Scooby-Doo, and other non-PD franchise characters.) Different to this tape, however, is the surprise inclusion of “The Care Bears’ Nutcracker Suite”.

Like the previous platinum tape, it has the three cartoons from the 30-minute Rudolph VHS, and the Richard Williams version of “A Christmas Carol”. The 1994 tape is another “Platinum Series” 90-plus minute release. Here are two more clamshell-case releases that Goodtimes put out within six years, all featuring the 1948 Max Fleischer 9-minute version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
